Choosing assisted living for a parent is one of the hardest calls a family makes, and a lot of families make it in the fall, after seeing Mom or Dad over a visit or a holiday. A tour shows you the rooms. These ten questions show you how the home actually runs.

The care

  1. How many staff are on duty during the day, at night and on weekends? Ask about nights. That's when you'll worry most.
  2. Who helps with medications, and how is it tracked?
  3. What happens if my parent's needs change? Ask what care the home can add, and when a move to a nursing home would be needed.
  4. Do you offer memory care? If memory is a concern now or could be later, ask how residents with dementia are supported and kept safe. Century offers memory care in both of its houses.

Daily life

  1. What does a normal day look like? Meals, activities, quiet time. Ask to see a weekly schedule.
  2. Can we eat a meal here? The food, and how staff talk to residents at the table, tell you a lot.
  3. How do you help new residents settle in? The first weeks are the hardest. Our guide to moving a parent into memory care covers what helps.

Family and cost

  1. How will you keep us updated? Ask who calls you, and how fast, when something changes.
  2. What's included in the monthly cost, and what's extra? Get it in writing. Century publishes its levels of care and pricing.
  3. Which payment sources do you accept? Ask directly. Century does not accept Medicaid or veterans benefits, and it's better to know that up front at any home you tour.

Trust what you see

After the questions, notice the small things. Do residents look cared for? Do staff know their names? Does it feel like a home or a building? A smaller home often means the staff knows every resident, and every family, personally. That's why Century keeps its size small on purpose.
